Access

CLARAty has two repositories: a public repository and a private one.

Public Access

The public repository is accessible without any restriction and its usage is governed by the CLARAty TSPA License. To access the public repository, skip this section and go directly to the download section.

Private Access

This section applies to you if you were planning to use CLARAty for work funded under a NASA or U.S. government sponsored programs (Mars Technology Program, Intelligent Systems Program, JPL Director's Research and Development Fund, or other contract with JPL or NASA).

The private repository contains modules that are governed by different restrictions. Most modules (~300 modules) are slated for release and are awaiting review and updates for public release.  Some modules (~40 modules) are governed by intellectual property restrictions and are targeted for internal use or for use by the U.S. government programs only. Few modules (~5 modules) are governed by ITAR restrictions and hence are generally inaccessible unless you have proper clearance.

To access the private repository, you need to have an AFS account and be part of the claraty group. To use the CLARAty bench top system you also need to have a JPL robotics account. The JPL robotics account is not necessary if you are running the software on your own robot platform. See below for procedures to access the private repository from JPL or from an external institution.

AFS Account

From JPL

  • Set up an AFS account.
  • Send email to CLARAty administrator with your username to be added to the claraty group. Charges for your AFS account should be distributed proportionally among all projects that require use of AFS. Use your CLARAty charge number for the portion of support needed for CLARAty. If you are working on a task that is delivering software to CLARAty, use that task's charge number.

From an External Institution

Please see the flowchart for a summary of the procedure. If you satisfy the above criteria (working on a NASA/government related project) and are either a U.S. citizen, a U.S. Permanent Resident, or a foreign national from Country List B, then you can request access to the CLARAty private repository. If you are a foreign national, you may be asked to fill out additional forms and provide a copy of your passport.

Here are the steps to gain access:

  1. Affiliate Badge Request (E2190 Form)
Email the CLARAty administrator the following information to start the E2190 process. You will receive information via email on the forms to fill out. Once you submit the forms, we will start the approval process.
  2. Wait for Approval
The process usually takes between 5 - 10 business days. Once all the information is verified and approval granted, JPL will create an AFS account for you to access the CLARAty private repository. You will be notified via email of your account information.

AFS Installation

  1. Install an AFS file server from OpenAfs on the machine(s) at your institution that will require access to the software repository.
  2. Mount the JPL AFS cells onto that machine

Web Site Access

The CLARAty web site has three access levels.

  1. Unrestricted pages - accessible to the public.  These pages include information about CLARAty, access to the public repository and other technical information that has been cleared for release.
  2. Restricted pages - accessible to JPL and external affiliates who have received clearance to access the CLARAty private repository. All headers are marked with the "restricted access" banner. These pages require password access. When you receive your JPL AFS account, you will also be given a username and password for the CLARAty restricted pages.
  3. ITAR controlled pages - these pages have limited access. They require an additional password beyond the restricted one to gain access. These pages require a separate approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am working for Institution X and received clearance from JPL to access the CLARAty private repository. My colleague who works with me is from the approved Country List B, so can I show him the software?

A: Each external user must be aware of the restriction on the CLARAty private software repository that was designated by the U.S. Commerce Department. Sharing software with other people on Country List B falls under their institution's responsibility. It is the responsibility of that institution to do due diligence regarding the sharing of restricted software with other employees who are allowed to see that software. Our recommendation for external users is to consult their legal office for advice prior to sharing this software with other personnel working for the same organization. External users should be aware that the sharing of restricted software with another user is an act of "re-export" done by that institution.
